The 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss

The 4-Hour Work Week by Tim FerrissThis book is a game changer, at least it was for me and it can be for you too.

This book is not a get rich quick scheme, nor is it for slackers.

The 4HWW is for you if you can answer yes to these questions:

  • Are you open minded enough to think outside of the box?
  • Are you willing to take the risk to actually step outside of the box to improve your life?

At the very least T4HWW forces you to take a long hard look at what you know to be true about work, life and retirement.

At best it provides you with the strategies and mindset to plan your income and live life on terms that are personally satisfying to you.

Most importantly the ideas in the book can be applied no matter if you work for someone else, are self employed or own a business.

The first time I read this book some of my favorite parts were the ‘Comfort Challenges’ at the end of most chapters. These challenges alone could have been developed into a book unto themselves about how to break out of your comfort zone and be more confident and proactive. The challenges are designed to have you complete an activity which pushes your boundaries of interaction with people in order to build your self confidence.

Some people have criticized this book because they feel the author seems too arrogant or talks too much about traveling throughout the book.

Is the author arrogant? No, to me the author is just confident and conveys that confidence though his writing to keep you engaged and to keep doubt at bay. Some of the ideas in the book can be difficult to digest at first and if he doesn’t present them will as much vigor as possible it can be tempting to give in to self doubt.

Does the author go off on tangents talking about travel at times? Yes, but he does so to provide examples of how he used his own ideas to do the things *he* wanted to do in life. You don’t have to like or want to do the same things, just understand that these discussions are not bragging, just the author giving real life examples of his ideas in action.

Ferriss is clear throughout T4HWW that the goal is not to be lazy and do less, but rather to be as efficient and productive with your time and energy as possible to maximize and automate your income so you can spend more time on things that are personally satisfying to you.

He puts it best by saying;

‘The vast majority of people will never find a job that can be an unending source of fulfillment, so that is not the goal here, to free time and automate income is.’

(emphasis is mine)

The 4HWW provides you with a wealth of ideas on how to free your time and automate your income by ‘outsourcing’ as much busy work from your life as possible. The best ways Ferriss explains to this is to either hire someone (ala VA’s) to do the work for you, or (my favorite) eliminate entirely.

Think about it, how much time do you spend doing things that aren’t really productive that someone else could do?

The book is full of examples of these ideas being used in the real world, along with reference resources and exercises for putting those ideas into action in your life.

The quotes throughout the book are priceless too. Ferriss found some of the most thought provoking quotes relevant to the subject matter at hand and peppered them throughout the book to help emphasize his ideas.

There are also several worksheets and flowcharts throughout the book that are very helpful in planning your muse and understanding how to be more efficient with your time. The flowchart on page 144 is brilliant because it simplifies decision making to a 3 step process. Yes, it really can be that simple.

‘…to free time and automate income…’

The 4HWW is a great book and while it may not provide all of the answers upfront, it will help you ask the right questions so you can find the answers that work best for your life.

Do you want more time to do the things in life you enjoy?

Would you like to have a steady source of ‘automatic’ income?

If you answered yes to either of the above just buy the book and read it.
